Well Job, Gertrude is the queer fictional story of how Gertrude Stein and a rural telephone operator named Nell fall in love over the telephone in 1935. Nell runs the switchboard for her tiny farming community out of her home, working six days a week, eleven hours a day. Gertrude Stein is on her groundbreaking six month lecture tour of the United States, giving 74 lectures in 37 cities in 23 states. Due to some crossed wires, the women strike up an unlikely long distance friendship - or is it a romance? Part historical revisionist lesbian rom-com, part movie musical, part telecommunications thriller, Well Job, Gertrude! is a story about falling in love and finding out how to tell the story.
Well Job, Gertrude was presented as a work in progress showing at the HOT Festival at Dixon Place in July of 2014 and as part of New Works in Three at The Wild Project in May 2015.
